Update from Pastor Glen – July 29, 2022
Hey South family. Just a quick video to encourage you.
I am at the moment, right in the middle of studying for this week’s sermon that I’ll be sharing this coming Sunday in our next part of the series, in “The Jesus Code”. And I’m looking specifically at Abraham. As I’m studying Abraham, one of the things that is really becoming apparent is how unqualified Abraham was for what God was planning to do through him and in him and his family. There’s a lot of evidence to say that Abraham wasn’t even believing in God at the point when God called him. That his whole family were, even though you don’t use this word pagan at that time, but pagan worshipers. And his age and then his ongoing struggles and sin, just so many reasons from a human level for God not to choose Abraham and his family to ultimately bring salvation to the world through Jesus.
It’s just so encouraging for me because as we look at ourselves and as we look at our different situations in life, we actually see that there is no real reason why God would choose me. There’s no real reason why God would choose you. That sounds like really bad news this morning, but it’s actually really good news. But we struggle with that, don’t we? Because everything inside of us struggles with the idea of this unmerited grace. That deep down inside, we still believe that somehow we need to earn the love of God. Deep down inside, we still believe that we have to be deserving of the love of God. But God proves in calling Abraham, that there is nothing there. That it’s while we’re still sinners, that this grace is such a profoundly powerful moment in our lives because there is nothing there to deserve it. But we struggle with that. We kind of acknowledge it and go well, yeah, you know, there’s nothing we can do to earn the love of God. And on a head level, in our heart, I think still deep down inside, we struggle with the idea that God loves us because He loves us because He loves us. So that might be really important for you to hear this morning.
I’d love for you to read ahead from Genesis 12 and Genesis 15 and Genesis 17. These moments where God does profound promises and covenental promises in Abraham’s life. That God has promise, and He’s got promise for your life. And it’s not based on who you are and what you’ve done. It’s based on what Jesus has done and who Jesus is. And so I really feel that this is something important for us to dwell on as we move throughout our week, that He loves you because He loves you because He loves you. And it’s all based on the love and the actions of Jesus, nothing that you and I can do to deserve that. It’s amazing.
And so, study ahead and please pray for me as I study. I’m really enjoying this sermon and my prayer is not only will you enjoy it, but actually it will result in something really profound happening in your hearts and in your minds.
Also Sunday night, lots of details in the email, I’m sure, but Sunday night is our Pursuit WillowOne Prayer at 5:30. Pastor Phil is away on holiday. In fact, a lot of our staff are away on holiday right now, which is great. So we’re going to have this really nice, intimate prayer time. We’ve got some beautiful worship. I’m believing it’s going to be beautiful from Zac and I think Sarah might be involved and I know Luke and other members of the team are going to be there. And we’re going to just have a really nice prayer and worship time. So Sunday at 5:30, would love to see you there.
I’d also love to see you on Sunday morning at 10:30.
