Why the book of Ephesians? We chose this book for our current series because we believe that there is much within this small letter that will speak to us today as a church – both corporately and individually. The letter to the Ephesians is an amazing piece of literature because it is not only loaded with wonderful theology, but it is equally valuable in its practicality for how we as Christ followers should live in today’s world.
If we had to summarize in one word what this letter is about, reconciliation is the word we would use. Hence the series title,“ONE”. Ephesians is really about vertical and horizontal reconciliation – our reconciliation with God and each other.
Ephesians also has much to say about the church and to the church (and just to clarify – when we talk about church we are not talking about the actual building or the activities that go on there on a Sunday morning – we are talking about Christ followers and the life they live 24/7 as they are scattered throughout the community). The church is the place where God’s reconciling heart and will for the world is made known. The church is meant to be the place where the world sees what God is like and what he is doing.
God is doing a new thing in our world, and his desire is to bring all things together under Christ (Eph.1.10). Jesus has defeated the cosmic forces of this world and has shown a new way to be human; a way that is not divided by hostility but brought together in peace and love. The purpose of my life and your life is to demonstrate to the world around us this thing that God is doing.
